Knox
For the first time in years, Knox hadnât slept well the previous night. Usually, he was so worn out from traveling or trying to squeeze the creative juices out of his brain that he dropped into bed and fell asleep before his head even hit the pillow. But after his conversation with Claudia, sleep wouldnât come.
He lay awake, his mind filled with images of Claudia. The way her eyes held a world of sadness but could still light up an entire room. The way her skin warmed under his touch. The way her entire face changed when she tipped her lips up at the corners into a smile.
And today heâd get to spend the whole day with her. He hadnât been this excited since the Christmas Eve before Decker told him Santa Claus didnât exist. His nerves tingled, his mouth had gone dry, and he couldnât seem to stand still for longer than a few seconds at a time.
Finally, a few minutes after nine, Claudia drove toward him on the ATV. He pulled his baseball cap lower to shield his eyes from the sun as he followed her progress down the beach.
She cut the engine when she stopped in front of him. âIt was either this or riding horses. I figured youâd be okay on either, but I do much better on wheels.â
âMaybe someday Iâll teach you how to ride a horse.â
âMaybe someday Iâll let you.â She slid off the seat and nodded for him to take her spot. âYou can drive this time.â
âYou sure?â Heâd been looking forward to sandwiching her between his thighs again.
âOh, Iâm sure.â She took the backpack heâd packed and attached it to the back of the ATV, where sheâd already stashed a tote. âLetâs get going. Weâre burning daylight.â
âAre you in a hurry?â He flung his leg over the seat and tried to get comfortable while he waited for her to climb on behind him.
âIn a hurry to start having fun.â She had on a pair of dark shades and he would have given just about anything to get a look at her eyes.
âLetâs get moving, then.â He turned the key, and the ATV hummed to life.
Claudia slid a leg over the seat and held on to his shoulders. He waited until she told him she was ready, then gunned it so sheâd have to hold on tight. She moved her hands down to squeeze her arms around his middle and squealed.
âHold on,â he called out over his shoulder. Her breasts pressed against his back, and he could feel her thighs next to his. He didnât care about anything at the moment except the thrill of racing along the beach with Claudia. All the details that had been crowding his head floated away on the salty sea breeze. He didnât care about his obligation to the label, the threats from his manager, or the countless number of people depending on him.
As the wind blew past his ears, he was just a guy speeding down the beach on a Tuesday morning with a gorgeous girl squeezing him tight.
